Too Much Too Soon?

Asya asks, So my baby sister made a year on Oct. 15, 2011. And really that is of little relevance, as my dilemma resides on the top of her head, but I just thought I’d share that with you guys so that you know the age you’re working with. Long story short, her hair is taking its dear sweet time to sprout from her hair follicles. I massage her hair daily, usually with Cantu Leave-In or Organic Root Stimulator for Girls, and I must admit I have seen some growth over the last month and a half or so. However, I’m ready for her to have pigtails and baby twistouts dammit! To date, I am 6 months natural (my BC was July 2011) thus I am well aware that patience is a big ass virtue when it comes to growing healthy hair. But geez! Baby girl is a cutie pie regardless; I was wondering if there was anything else I could do to enhance growth. I don’t expect for her to wake up tomorrow with hair to her little butt or anything—just enough to make some cute little ponytails. Am I asking for too much, too soon? My mother says I had pigtails at her age… let’s blame her for my anxiety.

J says: I'm handing this one over to y'all. What do you think?

  1. She's only a year old, gotta give her time to grow, lol.

  2. She is a dollbaby, so precious!

Unfortunately, you'll just have to be patient on this one. My little sis wasn't able to get pigtails for quite sometime but when she did, she was my little guinea pig for all types of styles, lol.

  4. It's funny because most of my friends and little cousins that didn't have much hair when they were babies grew up to have really long, fast-growing hair. just be patient shawty l0l

    1. I agree. My sister and I didn't have hair for the longest while our two brothers were born with head fulls that constantly needed cutting. Its a running joke throughout my family on how my grandmother used Baby Don't Be Bald on me for about 2 years because of her fear of me being bald. Now my sister and I have long, thick hair. Don't worry Asya, it common in the first 1-2 years.

  5. Since she is so young, I would stop using the hair products that have more complex chemicals in them even if they are for children. I'm echoing What Anon11:41pm said about using water, coconut oil, or even shea or olive oils and just small amounts of them. Perhaps you might want to redirect your focus onto your hair while researching about natural hair up-keep/chemicals used in black hair products/and societal pressure/opinions upon Black hair in the mean time as the little girl's hair grows at it's own pace.

  6. Yes, you should definitely be patient and let her hair grow at it's own pace. You are probably causing more harm than good. Babies have very fine and fragile hair. As you learn about being natural you will find out that low manipulation leads to less breakage which leads to healthier hair and length retention. You should stop using that brush on her hair as well. So what if you had pigtails at her age, it doesn't mean she should. You shouldnt put to much emphasis on her hair especially during her younger years. We need to stop raising our girls to base their identity around the length or lack thereof of their hair. But I digress.

  7. hair products..on a baby..? are you serious? you're taking this hair thing to the next level. she's a baby for christ sake. don't use your child as a guinea pig. for all you know, you could be damaging the child's development with that stuff and you wouldn't even know cause all you're doing is worrying about having a baby with long hair. what's wrong with you?

  8. - I think that we should hold off on the Cantu && just let nature run its course. She's still baby so go for maybe a little Olive Oil (JUST A LITTLE) mixed with some water if yuh feel the need to put something in her hair. I have twin cousins and they are a year now... The boy has more hair than the girl and I couldn't put his in pigtails if I wanted to. So just be patient.
